NMT

Music Therapy is an established psychological clinical intervention, delivered by HCPC registered Music Therapists to help people whose lives have been affected by injury, illness or disability through supporting their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative and social needs.

Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is an evidence-based, neuroscientific model of practice based on 20 standardised clinical techniques for sensorimotor training, speech & language training, and cognitive training. Each technique has its own target population, research-base, and clinical protocols. NMT is driven by advances in neuroscience and the understanding of the perception, production, and performance of music and how music can influence and change non-musical brain and behaviour function.

Neurologic Music Therapy uses music to work on non-musical goals, in other words, music is just the tool that we use to support patients in a range of clinical goals, including increasing arousal and/or awareness, improving attention and working memory, increasing physical strength, improving ability to follow verbal instructions and make choices, among many others.

Sessions are personalised to each individual’s needs, and adapted as the therapy progresses. Music helps re-frame rehabilitation, to take what may be repetitive and make it interesting, to take the focus off something that may be painful. Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) makes rehabilitation engaging, personalised and relevant.
